Why Skibattical?

Skibattical – n.

a period of time granted to someone to hit the slopes and ski or ride to their hearts content.

In 2018, my husband and I bought a van and spent 4 months on the road traveling from Vermont west and north into British Columbia skiing at numerous ski areas. We loved the ski areas that allowed parking on their premises but there are many that do not. We were equipped with a few apps and websites that showed spots for spending an overnight. These apps and websites are great but we found that a lot of the spots are only available in the summer. Thus we spent a lot of time going from one to the other looking for somewhere that is plowed or open in the winter. The idea for this website was born from that experience. I wanted to have a database that showed ski areas and whether they allowed overnight parking or not. For those areas that do not allow overnight parking, I wanted to identify spots near ski areas that are open in the winter in order to reduce time searching and more time enjoying the beauty. The spots identified on this website we found through Facebook groups, digging deep into the apps and websites for vanlife, googling and also through experience. I tried to list the spot only if it is a legitimate spot and not one where you have to boondock or risk a knock in the night.

It is my hope that you find this information useful as you plan a winter adventure. If you have thoughts for improvements or spots for camping, please use the contact page and be in touch.

Please respect the areas where you do end up spending the night. Leave no trace is the best philosophy to practice so that this lifestyle can continue for many years.
